Ziwe: What do you think of the fact that all three of the black Bachelors and Bachelorettes have ended up with, you know, partners not of color?

Rachel Lindsay: That is a great question; it is something I was worried about before I went on the show. I think I got a little more grace because I was the first, and people were just excited that a person of color was in this role, but then I think when the next person chose someone who was not black and then by the time we went to the third one it was like, you know what, they are just not going to choose anybody who was black. This is what I’ll say to that. One, I do not think, I think it shows how unfairly people of color are held to certain standards that their white counterparts are not. On the other hand I will say, it is a casting issue. There was a point where I broke down on camera, and they used my tears for something else, but I was getting upset at the selection of men of color . . . And I also learned as I was going through my season that several of the black men on my season did not date black women.

Ziwe: Really??!

Rachel Lindsay: So there’s that.

Ziwe: Let’s unpack this.

Rachel Lindsay: The show found it interesting. Wow, this guy’s never dated a black woman before. And I said, you think that is interesting? That is my life, I live that. That is why I am speaking out. You do not need to just diversify your cast and your leads, you need to diversify the people behind the camera.1
